| Day 2: Visit the ‘Loveliest Castle in the World’ Leeds Castle. Enjoy the various attractions within 500 acres of glorious grounds surrounding the castle and its moat such as the aviary (home to over 100 species of endangered birds), the flowers and foliage abound in the formal gardens, the Culpeper and the Lady Baillie Garden. Finally, the maze with its secret underground grotto provides a challenging half hour (or more!). | |||
| This afternoon visit one of England’s most famous and most romantic gardens, Sissinghurst, a sixteenth century tower, and other buildings, with the most famous twentieth century garden in England. The garden was made on the site of a medieval manor and some structures survive. The historical importance of Sissinghurst comes from its role in transmitting Gertrude Jekyll’s design philosophy to a host of visitors. | |||
| Day 3: Visit the popular spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells. The heart of the original town is the colonnaded and paved tree-lined promenades, names ‘The Pantiles’ after the original square tiles. They were laid out in the 1700’s and now house pleasant restaurants and shops. | |||
| Penhurst Place lies just outside Tunbridge Wells. Penhurst’s splendour is the 11-acre formal garden which was one of the first to be restored, in the 1860s, to its ‘Old English’ style using Kip’s engraving (c1700) for guidance. A second restoration began in the 1970s. The gardens have a series of rectangular enclosures treated in different ways. There is a box parterre, an orchard, a rose garden and borders designed by Lanning Roper. | |||
| Day 4: Virginia Woolf once said of our destination today, ‘there is no lovelier place in the world… and I have seen Venice too.’ Made famous by Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and dominated by its Norman cathedral, the city of Canterbury has with its many ancient buildings, shops, bars and restaurants, retained both an old world charm and a cosmopolitan vitality. Canterbury still welcomes pilgrims from all corners of the globe, who flock to England’s most famous cathedral city. | |||
| A visit to Canterbury would not be complete without fascinating guided tour of the beautiful Cathedral. See the 11th century wall paintings, the spots where St Thomas Becket was slain and where his shrine once stood and learn about the contrasting styles of architecture which make up the fabulous Cathedral. | |||
