The breathtaking countryside and picturesque villages of the Lake District have inspired many a writer over the years. This tour explores the homes and inspirations of some of the more famous of these.
Day 1: Leaving early in the morning we will head up with comfort stops en route to the Lake District taking in the stunning scenery as we arrive at the hotel for 4 nights. You will be staying at the Cumbria Grand Hotel, Grange over Sands – this hotel is set in 25 acres of gardens and woodlands and this comfortable hotel is located only 6miles from Lake Windermere. The hotel makes an ideal base for visiting Lakeland’s major attractions. Facilities include tennis, golf practice nets and fitness trail. This lovely old house with antiques, log fires, friendly service has beautiful bedrooms with picturesque views. All rooms are en-suite, with TV, direct dial telephone, and tea/coffee facilities. There is a lift. Excellent food and wine have earned many accolades.
Day 2: Beatrix potter is the regions most famous daughter and her delightful books are among the best loved children’s stories of all time
The enchanting tale of her life was immortalised on the big screen – follow in the footsteps of the film’s cast and crew as you explore the places that touched and inspired ‘Miss Potter’. Visit Hill Top, the 17th century house where she wrote many of her famous stories and the Beatrix Potter Gallery, nearby in the pretty village of Hawkshead. This afternoon, spend more time at leisure in Bowness-on-Windermere. Explore this pretty lakeside town and maybe find out more about Beatrix Potter’s creations at the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction – you may even meet ‘Beatrix’ herself!
Day 3: Another write captivated and inspired by this beautiful area was William Wordsworth. A walking tour of the Lake District led Wordsworth to our first visit today, Dove Cottage. Dove Cottage was Wordsworth’s home until 1808; eight years of ‘…..plain living, but high thinking’, during which Wordsworth produced what are now regarded as his finest works. Now the cottage serves as a museum, telling the story of the house and the Wordsworth family. You could also visit William’s most beloved home, Rydal Mount. This was the Wordsworth family home for a number of years and is still in the hands of William’s descendents. The fascinating house also has stunning gardens with some features dating back to the days of William Wordsworth.
Day 4: Today’s literary link takes us onto the water with a cruise on Lake Coniston. Inspiration for Arthur Ransome’s ‘Swallows and Amazon’, relive the stories with a 40 minute cruise on the beautiful lake. The afternoon is at your leisure.
Day 5: Today we will be heading back home after breakfast with comfort stops en route.
